In-State NC State Basketball Recruit Announces Transfer

NC State basketball head coach Will Wade and his staff have zeroed in on North Carolina native King Gibson as a top priority in the 2027 recruiting class. Earlier this month, they extended a scholarship offer to the five-star combo guard following his unofficial visit to Raleigh.

Now, just weeks later, Gibson has announced his transfer from Montverde Academy (Fla.), a national prep powerhouse, to SPIRE Academy in Ohio. The move appears to be influenced, at least in part, by the transition of legendary high school coach Kevin Boyle—formerly of Montverde—who is also making the switch to SPIRE.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 185 pounds, King Gibson is an explosive backcourt talent who ranks No. 14 overall and the No. 1 combo guard in the 247Sports Composite for the 2027 class.

His recruitment has quickly gained momentum, with over two dozen offers now on the table. Among them are NC State’s in-state rival UNC, along with several other ACC programs including Florida State, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech. Gibson is also drawing heavy interest from the SEC, with Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Texas A\&M all extending offers.
