Alex Cora Defends Decision to Miss Red Sox Game for Daughter’s Graduation
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora missed a game this week to celebrate a major family milestone — his daughter Camila’s college graduation — and says he has no regrets.
“Just a day that we will always remember,” Cora, 49, told reporters on Tuesday, May 20, reflecting on Camila’s graduation from Boston College the day before.
Cora sat out the opening game of a series against the New York Mets, drawing criticism from some in the local media who noted that the graduation ceremony reportedly ended early enough for him to still make the evening game.
“People have their own opinions,” Cora said in response. “I bet those people have families too, and at some point, they’ve had to make decisions for them. I made the best decision for my daughter. For those who don’t understand — I’m not going to try to convince them. It is what it is.”
Sports radio host Mike Felger of Boston’s 98.5 The Sports Hub was among the critics, calling Cora’s absence “preposterous” and suggesting he could have attended the ceremony and still managed the game. “They were, I believe, done by noon,” Felger said. “Just cab down the street and manage the game.”
Still, Cora stood by his choice, emphasizing that Camila came first. He also noted that had the graduation been held out of state, it would have required him to miss even more time with the team.
For Cora, family came first — and that’s a decision he’s standing by.
