With the passing of longtime owner Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts are entering a new chapter of leadership. Ownership of the team has transitioned to a joint venture among his three daughters, with Carlie Irsay-Gordon stepping into the spotlight as both co-owner and CEO. While all three women will have roles moving forward, Carlie is most directly filling her father’s shoes, prompting questions about how active she’ll be in daily operations.
Ownership styles vary across the NFL. Some owners prefer a more passive, behind-the-scenes approach, while others take a hands-on role in guiding the organization. Early indications suggest Irsay-Gordon is firmly in the latter category.
Long before fans knew her name, many may have noticed her on the sidelines during games—wearing a headset and carrying a tablet or clipboard. This was no symbolic gesture. “I need to be able to say, ‘Is this person full of B.S.? Do they even know what they’re talking about?’” she said. “It is such a complex organism, a football team and how it operates on game day.”
Those who know her describe her as highly detail-oriented and driven to gain firsthand knowledge. Her proactive approach stands in contrast to some new owners who make sweeping changes without fully understanding the franchise they’ve inherited.
Carlie Irsay-Gordon has already put in the work to understand the Colts organization at a deep level. She’s not likely to be misled by “coach speak” or vague management jargon. Her preparation, experience, and willingness to engage directly with all aspects of the team will only enhance her effectiveness as both an owner and CEO.
While things may not look exactly as they did under Jim Irsay, that doesn’t mean the future can’t be just as strong—or even stronger—under Carlie Irsay-Gordon’s leadership.
