As the new season approaches, Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel remains focused on recruiting, staying active in the race for some of the nation’s top talent. However, one highly sought-after prospect is officially off the board.
Five-star EDGE LaDamion Guyton announced his college commitment Thursday afternoon, choosing Texas Tech over Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. The Red Raiders had long been considered the frontrunner, so it came as little surprise when Guyton confirmed he’ll be taking his talents to Lubbock.
5-Star EDGE LaDamion Guyton Commits to Texas Tech Over Tennessee, Others
Texas Tech continues to build serious recruiting momentum, landing another major prospect in 5-star EDGE LaDamion Guyton. The 2027 standout chose the Red Raiders over Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia, announcing his commitment on Thursday afternoon. While the Vols were in the mix, this one wasn’t much of a shock—Guyton never even visited Knoxville.
Credit where it’s due: Texas Tech is on a roll. Guyton’s decision comes not long after the program also secured a commitment from 2026 five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo.
For Tennessee fans, missing out on the nation’s top-ranked EDGE stings, but there’s still plenty to be excited about. Head coach Josh Heupel already secured a marquee commitment in 2026 five-star quarterback Faizon Brandon. And for the 2027 class, the Vols are far from done.
One key target is elite linebacker Cooper Witten, son of Tennessee legend Jason Witten. Naturally, he’s a fan favorite among Vols supporters who would love to see the legacy continue in orange. Another notable name on the board is Kenneth Simon, another legacy recruit with strong interest in Tennessee—though Notre Dame is making a serious push.
As it stands, the Vols already have one commitment for the 2027 class: JP Peace. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker checks in as a three-star prospect, ranked No. 26 at his position nationally and No. 11 overall in the state. Peace has deep Tennessee roots—he’s the son of former Vols linebacker Robert Peace and the grandson of legendary head coach Phillip Fulmer.
With ties like that, Tennessee’s recruiting story is far from over.
