When highly touted guard Ian Jackson committed to Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program over two years ago, many expected his stay in Chapel Hill to be a brief, one-and-done experience. That prediction turned out to be accurate—just not in the way most anticipated.

Rather than declaring for the 2025 NBA Draft, Jackson surprised many by entering the transfer portal in early April. He later committed to play for the St. John’s Red Storm.
The decision came as a shock to a number of Tar Heel fans. This week, however, Jackson shed light on his reasoning during an episode of his podcast, The Captain Jack Show.
“I feel like at Carolina, it just wasn’t for me,” he shared. “There were things I couldn’t show or do on the floor that I feel like I could’ve done.”
The 20-year-old Jackson also shared some positives about his experience in Chapel Hill.
“I’m gonna miss it there, bro,” he said. “Carolina was great. The school itself was great. The kids, the fans—it was lit, man.”
In the end, it seems Jackson simply felt his style of play didn’t quite mesh with the UNC basketball system.
