Stop me if you’ve heard this before: 2025 is a pivotal season for Virginia Tech and head coach Brent Pry. If ever there were a team and coach in need of a breakout year, it’s the Hokies.
After a fair amount of roster turnover and several coaching changes, Pry hopes fresh faces can spark a turnaround. The transfer portal has delivered some promising additions, but the road ahead is far from smooth. The 2025 schedule is no cakewalk—and three matchups, in particular, could define the season.
Three Season-Defining Games for Virginia Tech in 2025
Aug. 31 — vs. South Carolina (Atlanta)
The Hokies open with a heavyweight test. South Carolina arrives with swagger, led by dynamic quarterback LaNorris Sellers, and they’re getting the kind of preseason hype Virginia Tech enjoyed a year ago.
A win here would be the “signature” moment Pry still seeks in Blacksburg. Even a competitive loss could pay dividends, setting the tone for the season’s first month.
Sept. 6 — vs. Vanderbilt
Last year’s overtime loss to Vandy still stings, and revenge should be a motivator. The Commodores return key pieces, including QB Diego Pavia, and have shown they can pull off surprises.
If Tech drops the opener to South Carolina, this game becomes must-win territory. Starting 0–2—despite a softer stretch with Old Dominion and Wofford—would put Pry’s job security squarely in the conversation.
Sept. 27 — at NC State
By the end of non-conference play, 3–1 is the target, but 2–2 is possible. That makes the ACC opener in Raleigh critical. A victory here would not only boost bowl hopes but also build momentum with winnable games against Wake Forest and Georgia Tech next.
Steal this one, and the Hokies could control their destiny in October.
