After the buildup leading into 2024, the Hokies’ season quickly unraveled with an overtime loss to Vanderbilt in Week 1. What followed was a disappointing 6-6 finish — two to three wins short of what many expected. Now, as Athlon Sports releases its 2025 ACC predictions, Virginia Tech finds itself right where most would expect: in the bottom half of the conference.
A mix of NFL departures and transfer portal exits has led to significant roster turnover, and Pry has reshaped his staff with a wave of new assistant coaches. Here’s what Athlon had to say in its preview:
“The Hokies entered 2024 with high expectations and optimism following a 7-6 season. But instead of a step forward, injuries hit this team hard, and coach Brent Pry’s squad needed a late win over Virginia on Nov. 30 just to become bowl eligible. Is a large transfer haul and staff changes enough for the program to show improvement in what could be a make-or-break year for Pry?”

The reality is clear: 2025 is a pivotal year for both Pry and Drones. What qualifies as success — and whether that’s enough to secure Pry’s job — is still unknown. But in terms of expectations and projected placement, Athlon’s prediction seems right on target.
