A year ago, expectations for the Virginia Tech football team were sky-high. Fast forward to now, and the outlook for the 2025 season looks quite different. After a disappointing 6-7 record last year, coupled with significant roster and coaching changes, what should fans realistically expect from the Hokies this fall?
Answers will vary depending on who you ask. Is seven wins the goal? Six? Or is simply becoming bowl-eligible enough? While the last option might not be what the fanbase wants to hear, it could very well be the reality. One ACC Network analyst has shared his perspective on what success looks like for Virginia Tech this season — and it might hit closer to home than fans would like.
ACC Network analyst Eric Mac Lain sets the bar for Virginia Tech football in 2025
Eric Mac Lain, a former Clemson offensive lineman and current ACC Network analyst, appeared on the Tech Sideline podcast to discuss the upcoming season. When asked about realistic expectations for Virginia Tech, he didn’t sugarcoat it.
“You don’t live in mediocrity,” Mac Lain said. “You don’t want me to just say, ‘Make a bowl game, and you’re good.’ That’s not the case. The bare minimum for Virginia Tech is talking about going to a bowl game. But with new faces and first-year coordinators this year, that’s probably the measuring stick. A successful season might look like getting back to a bowl game, winning it, and building momentum heading into the offseason — whether through adding new players or developing the current roster through recruiting.”
Unfortunately, that’s a significant step back from where the program stood this time last year. Still, Mac Lain’s realistic expectations might not satisfy the fanbase for long. The question remains: can the Hokies surprise everyone by winning at least seven games and redefining what success looks like in 2025?
