Recruiting for the Class of 2026 has been an uphill battle for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry. Two four-star commits have already flipped to other programs, leaving the class thin in key position groups.
The quarterback situation has been particularly turbulent. Virginia Tech’s lone early pledge, Peyton Falzone, committed in June 2024 but decommitted that November to join Penn State—only to later back out again and ultimately land at Auburn in the SEC. His departure left the Hokies without a quarterback in the 2026 class.
That changed on Thursday, when Virginia Tech secured a commitment from Louisiana three-star quarterback Cole Bergeron. The pledge marks a key win for first-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, who also landed his first quarterback of the 2027 class last week in Ben Musser. Now, Pry and his staff finally have a signal caller in the 2026 class.
Cole Bergeron caught Virginia Tech’s attention during a workout on campus this summer, and since then, head coach Brent Pry, offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, and quarterbacks coach Brian Crist have made him a top priority. Standing 6-foot-4½ and weighing 210 pounds, Bergeron is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 27 quarterback nationally and the No. 14 overall prospect in Louisiana.
The Louisiana native held nine scholarship offers and ultimately chose Virginia Tech over Colorado and Georgia Tech. His commitment is a significant win for Pry’s 2026 class, filling the void left by former commit Peyton Falzone. Bergeron brings a big arm and classic pro-style traits to the table.
247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks describes him as a “big-framed pro-style quarterback” with “a corresponding big arm that shows in downfield vertical passing game juice and short-to-intermediate velocity. Excellent timing and touch passer who knows how to throw to spots to allow only his receivers to make plays on the ball. Smooth, repeatable release fosters consistent spiral and RPMs.”
For Virginia Tech, landing Bergeron isn’t just about filling a roster spot—it’s a statement move that gives the program a potential difference-maker and a step forward toward shaping its future.
