Former Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton is still chasing his opportunity in the NFL, and he may finally get a real shot after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.
Milton, a sixth-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, appeared in just one game during his rookie season. But he made the most of it—completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, while also adding 16 rushing yards and a score on the ground.
Despite his promising performance, New England is fully committed to Drake Maye as their quarterback of the future and opted to move Milton to Dallas.
Now with the Cowboys, Milton is already turning heads in training camp as he looks to challenge franchise QB Dak Prescott. One highlight that lit up social media came when Milton connected with his former Tennessee teammate, tight end Princeton Fant, on a deep pass—giving Vols fans a reason to smile.
Milton and Fant spent two seasons together on Rocky Top before going their separate ways—Fant joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft, and Milton entering the league a year later.
Fant has seen limited action over his two seasons in Dallas, appearing in ten games mostly in a special teams role. He’s been frequently moved between the practice squad and the active roster—11 times in total—as he continues to fight for a permanent spot on the team.
This preseason, though, both Milton and Fant have a real shot at solidifying their places on the Cowboys’ roster. If they can continue to climb the depth chart, their connection from Tennessee could translate into some exciting moments for Dallas this fall.
