Indiana men’s basketball sophomore guard Gabe Cupps is expected to redshirt this season after undergoing successful knee surgery last week. The surgery was performed to address a pre-existing meniscus injury in his left knee, which had been affecting his performance.
Cupps, who played a significant role during his freshman year with 22 starts in 33 appearances, has struggled to find his footing this season. In four games, he logged just 25 minutes on the court, failing to score and contributing only three assists and one rebound. His most recent game action came during the Battle 4 Atlantis, where he played four minutes against Providence College.
Head coach Mike Woodson confirmed that Cupps will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season, emphasizing the importance of allowing him to fully recover. With the addition of transfer guards Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle, along with veteran players like Trey Galloway and Anthony Leal, the Hoosiers are well-equipped to handle the absence of Cupps.
As Indiana looks to navigate the challenges of the season, redshirting Cupps could provide him with an opportunity to heal and develop further for future campaigns. The decision reflects a strategic approach to ensure that he returns stronger and more prepared for the competitive landscape of college basketball.
