Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian adopted a respectful demeanor while talking about the Ohio State Buckeyes before their College Football Playoff semifinal matchup. In a conversation with reporters on Friday, Sarkisian did not provide the Buckeyes with any bulletin board fodder.
“I require Longhorn Nation to fill Arlington,” Sarkisian stated, as reported by ESPN’s Dave Wilson. “We will require all our resources to attempt to secure a victory in this match.” Obviously, we are significant underdogs. No one anticipates us succeeding in this. … This is the top team in college football, and we need to give our utmost effort to have a chance at victory.”
Sarkisian also underscored the difficulty Texas encounters in managing Ohio State’s exceptional wide receivers, Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka.
Sarkisian commented on Ohio State’s wide receivers, stating, “They are both large, physical athletes.” “They possess length, speed, and outstanding playmaking skills.” Their range for catching is vast. Incorporate that into the plan created by Coach [Chip] Kelly and Coach [Ryan] Day, along with a quarterback who throws the ball accurately. All of this makes them extremely influential players, and we are going to face a significant challenge in defending against them.”
Sarkisian’s evaluation is completely accurate.
Ohio State has finally attained the elite level that supporters expected throughout the season. They showcase talent and depth in every position, with their wide receiver group offering a distinct challenge for any defense. Quarterback Will Howard has improved his performance, excelling in the passing game while introducing a dual-threat element that makes defensive strategies more challenging.
Defensively, the Buckeyes are tenacious, organized, and bold, exhibiting no obvious flaws. They’re performing at their highest level of the season, and Sarkisian wisely refrained from providing them with any additional motivation following their recent displays. Ohio State excels when inspired, and the Longhorns prefer not to encounter an energized Buckeyes team.
Certainly, Sarkisian is using the traditional “no one believes in us” narrative—a frequent motivational strategy in sports. However, clichés are prevalent for a purpose, and in this instance, it holds true.
Few beyond the Texas locker room will have faith in the Longhorns, and considering the recent performances of both teams, that doubt seems warranted.
