When the Miami Dolphins acquired star wide receiver Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs, many believed that Hill’s addition could dethrone the Buffalo Bills as AFC East champions. Miami sent away several draft picks to obtain Hill to team up with Tua Tagovailoa.
Hill shone as a standout for the Dolphins during his initial two seasons. He recorded consecutive seasons with over 1,700 receiving yards, alongside 20 receiving touchdowns. Nonetheless, Hill was unable to assist the Dolphins in overcoming the playoff barrier, as Miami was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the past two years (against Buffalo and Kansas City).
The Dolphins wrapped up their season with an 8-9 record, placing second in the AFC East. They viewed their record as 2-6, practically eliminating any chance for the playoffs. They finished with a 6-3 record in the final games, but the significant deficit they created early on proved too challenging to overcome.
One reason the Dolphins have not consistently achieved success is that Tua has been sidelined at times due to injuries. That consequently restricts Hill in terms of his contributions to the Miami offense. This previous season was Hill’s least productive statistically with the Dolphins, yet he still recorded 939 yards and 6 touchdowns, despite Tua missing additional time.
Tyreek Hill might seek an exit from Miami.
As reported by Joe Schad, following Miami’s 32-20 defeat to the New York Jets, Hill informed reporters that “he must prioritize what is best for his career, whether that is in Miami or another location.”
The Dolphins were eliminated from playoff contention after losing to the Jets, but they would have been out of the race anyway because the Denver Broncos defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. Nonetheless, Hill’s early comments might place Miami in a difficult situation. Without Hill, Tua wouldn’t be able to execute the plays he has demonstrated he can.
Considering that the season has just wrapped up for the Dolphins, there will inevitably be a cooling-off phase. Nonetheless, if Hill continues to feel this way after the Super Bowl and leading into free agency, the Dolphins might need to tackle that problem to prevent a media uproar.
