Another possible target for the New York Yankees was removed from consideration on Jan. 6, as Gavin Lux was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. The Yankees require an infielder, and the more time they take to acquire one through free agency or a trade, the greater the likelihood there won’t be a fresh addition in the Bronx this spring.
The choices are diminishing for the Yankees. They might consider being inventive by acquiring a player who can play various positions, such as Jurickson Profar, or bring in a reliable second or third baseman.
Remaining with Profar, he played as an infielder in the initial phases of his career before transitioning to the outfield almost exclusively. The Yankees might see him as achieving two goals with one action. He plays left field, a possible area of necessity, and can fill in at second when required.
His contract likely won’t be overly substantial, possibly explaining why they must fully commit to the switch-hitter who recorded a career-best 137 OPS+ last season.
Tim Kelly from Bleacher Report forecasted that Profar would secure a two-year deal worth $34 million in free agency, a sum the Yankees could afford.
“Only a year after the Colorado Rockies let him go mid-season, Profar had the best season of his career.” He hit 24 home runs, recorded 85 RBIs, drew 76 walks, and achieved an .839 OPS. He not only made the All-Star team for the first time in his career, but he also earned a Silver Slugger award.
“Nonetheless, it’s reasonable that merely a year following a failed season largely with the Rockies, teams are somewhat doubtful about Profar.” Is he superior to what he demonstrated in 2023? Certainly. Will he ever reach the level of his achievements in 2024? “Most likely not,” Kelly noted on January 6.
