Transfer News: Two Defenders from the Minnesota Gophers Join Transfer Portal.

P.J. Fleck and the Minnesota Gophers concluded their 2024 season impressively, securing a convincing 24-10 victory against Virginia Tech in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The win concluded a solid finish, with the Gophers officially finishing the season at an 8-5 record.

P.J. Fleck has achieved an impeccable 6-0 record in bowl games while coaching at Minnesota, which is truly remarkable. It’s a reflection of the consistent success the program has experienced since he assumed control. With the season officially concluded, we’re now entering portal season, and Fleck and his team have been excelling, signing players consistently. Nonetheless, today presented a slight disadvantage as the Gophers lost two defenders to the portal.

Minnesota Gophers part ways with Coleman Bryson and Martin Owusu as they enter the transfer portal.

The Gophers received some difficult news today, but to be fair, it could have been tougher. Defensive back Coleman Bryson and defensive tackle Martin Owusu have officially registered in the transfer portal.

Bryson Coleman seized the attention as the MVP of the 2022 Pinstripe Bowl, accumulating seven tackles, deflecting a pass, and returning a 70-yard interception for a touchdown. Nonetheless, with Koi Perich now excelling, Coleman’s position has been affected. While with the Gophers, he recorded 54 tackles and participated in 612 plays. Coleman has two years of eligibility remaining to leave his impact on college football.

Conversely, Owusu hasn’t had a significant impact in his Gophers career to date. The Prior Lake native sat out in 2023 and has seen very few chances to play.

Owusu, a 3-star prospect from Prior Lake High School, completed his studies in 2023 and is finishing his second season with the Gophers. After sitting out his freshman year, he participated in only one game this season, facing Rhode Island, during which he made one tackle.

Owusu has genuinely been disappointing, and although Coleman displayed some potential, he was supplanted by Perich, who possesses too much talent to remain sidelined. You can’t truly fault either of them for seeking to pursue other options.
