Houston Texans cornerback Kris Boyd has issued an apology after a heated incident where he shoved special teams coordinator Frank Ross during the playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs on January 18.
Following a fumble recovery attempt, Boyd, overwhelmed with excitement, removed his helmet and celebrated prematurely, resulting in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. In the aftermath, he pushed Ross, which Boyd later described as an impulsive action not reflective of his character.”I was just too excited.
I did something I shouldn’t have done,” Boyd stated to reporters after the Texans’ 23-14 loss. He emphasized his respect for Ross and the coaching staff, noting that he had apologized to Ross personally and learned a valuable lesson about maintaining composure during games. Coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged the incident but clarified that he did not view Boyd’s actions as disrespectful, attributing them to an overabundance of enthusiasm rather than ill intent.
The incident began when Kris Boyd was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after throwing his helmet in celebration following a tackle during the opening moments of the Texans’ playoff game against the Chiefs. This penalty gave the Chiefs an early advantage.
Boyd later shoved special teams coordinator Frank Ross on the sideline in a heated moment.Reflecting on the incident, Boyd explained that Ross used it as a teaching opportunity, advising him to stay composed and focus on playing smart. Ross reminded Boyd that it was just the first six seconds of the game and encouraged him to lock in and concentrate on executing properly for the remainder of the match.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his disappointment regarding Kris Boyd’s actions during the game, stating, “We can’t start the game by throwing our helmet. That’s just foolish.” He emphasized that such behavior is not part of the team’s teachings or values.
Ryans pointed out that knowing the rules is crucial, and Boyd’s actions put the team in a negative position right from the start. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty not only hurt the team but also contributed to a significant return for the Chiefs. He concluded that this kind of behavior is simply not representative of smart football.
