The college games played late at night were a sight to behold. UConn lost away to Xavier, LSU and Alabama fought hard in Tuscaloosa, while Arkansas faced their sixth conference defeat under John Calipari. The evening was packed with excitement, exactly what supporters desire, and the atmosphere was tangible nationwide.
Regarding the early games, Iowa State achieved a strong away win, while Florida clinched an important home triumph against Georgia. The most exciting match of the day featured Pitt traveling to Syracuse and narrowly winning in a tense finish.
The primetime game showcased a top-10 showdown between Auburn and Tennessee. Both squads featured the premier defenses in the SEC, as shown in the first half, where the halftime score was a low 22-20. Entering the game, Auburn ranked among the top-scoring teams in the country.
Auburn secured a tough 53-51 win against the Volunteers, resulting in Tennessee’s consecutive loss away from home. Considering the intensity and excitement, this game is already a serious candidate for Game of the Year.
Nonetheless, one of the most significant narratives of the evening centered around Auburn newcomer Jahki Howard. During halftime, the 6-foot-6 forward shared a tweet with two emojis that puzzled fans. He removed the post right after the game.
That wasn’t the sole spectacle involving Howard. Following a defensive breakdown in the second half, head coach Bruce Pearl scolded him on the bench. Howard was displeased with the critique and departed from the bench, not coming back for the remainder of the game.
For the benefit of the Tigers, it is to be hoped that this does not turn into a persistent problem for Howard. It will be intriguing to find out if there will be any kind of disciplinary action or if Pearl and his team will view it as an isolated incident.
