Pennsylvania State College (AP) — Two months after guiding the Nittany Lions to the national championship and just days after finishing cancer treatments, Katie Schumacher-Cawley, the coach of Penn State women’s volleyball, agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season, the school said Friday.
When Schumacher-Cawley’s team defeated Nebraska and Louisville in the final four, she became the first female coach to win a national title in women’s volleyball. 35-2 was the Nittany Lions’ final score.
“Being a part of Penn State makes me extremely happy and honored,” Schumacher-Cawley stated. It is an honor that means a great deal to me to represent this amazing university, our legendary volleyball program, and the fervent Penn State community. Our success is based on the heritage left by our predecessors, and it is my and our job to preserve the custom, pride, and unwavering quest for perfection that characterize our program.”
The 44-year-old Schumacher-Cawley revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in October. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, she never missed a game or practice. On Monday, she said that her treatments were over.
