Although the Texas Longhorns will not conclude their spring season with the usual spring game, it doesn’t lessen the significant chance presented by the upcoming 15 practices for those on the team. Particularly for younger players at the receiver position, the Longhorns’ receiving group, aside from Ryan Wingo, lacks any other pass-catchers who have made even one career reception.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian announced in his recent press conference that DeAndre Moore Jr. will have restrictions this spring because of an injury. Though that may not be the information Longhorn fans wish to receive, particularly befo season in which Moore appears ready to increase his output. It will be a significant chance for those supporting Moore and Wingo to demonstrate their capabilities.
This may be particularly beneficial for new freshmen, Kaliq Lockett, Jaime Ffrench, and Michael Terry III, who will now receive additional reps during the spring. The group of freshman receivers were all top-rated recruits from high school and will now have the opportunity to secure a significant position in the Longhorns’ offense.
However, those three won’t be the only previously highly-rated recruits who will receive additional opportunities in the spring. Former four-star recruit, Aaron Butler will receive more opportunities after a freshman year where he participated in only one game.
The same applies to Parker Livingstone, the ex-three-star from Lucas, Texas, who will receive the same opportunity after playing in four games last season.
Although Sarkisian and his team would certainly prefer to have all of his receivers available for the spring, especially this year with quarterback Arch Manning taking over the offense. The additional repetitions for the underclassmen might work to the Longhorns’ advantage over time, as greater depth could be created at the position.
Having not added any receivers during the winter portal window, Texas will be able to assess their current options before the spring window begins. This might ultimately result in the Longhorns enhancing the position.
For the time being, they will allow their young players the opportunity to secure a role as contributors to the offense.
