Why Nick Boyd is an Ideal Addition for Greg Gard’s Wisconsin Basketball
The Wisconsin Badgers have been active in the transfer portal, seeing some departures while also pursuing key additions. Reserve guards Camren Hunter and Daniel Freitag have opted to transfer in search of more playing time elsewhere, raising questions about the state of Wisconsin’s high school recruiting pipeline. However, the Badgers are in the mix to land a top-tier guard from San Diego State who could be a seamless fit in Greg Gard’s system.
According to 247Sports, Nick Boyd is expected to commit to Wisconsin. Boyd, a three-year player at Florida Atlantic, was a key starter on FAU’s 2023 Final Four team. Over his three seasons with the Owls, he averaged 8.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. After transferring to San Diego State for the 2024 season, Boyd took on a larger role, boosting his scoring to 13.4 points per game while leading the Aztecs in assists with 3.9 per game across 31 starts.
If Wisconsin secures Boyd, it would be a significant addition to their backcourt. He has the versatility to run the point, which would allow John Blackwell to remain at shooting guard. His ability to facilitate an offense and create scoring opportunities makes him a valuable asset for a competitive program like Wisconsin.
For fans unfamiliar with his game, Boyd is an aggressive, quick guard who isn’t afraid to attack the rim. His playmaking skills allow him to drive the lane and dish to open shooters—a crucial ability in Gard’s offense, which relies heavily on perimeter shooting.
Boyd attempted 148 three-pointers last season, connecting on 35% of them. While not an elite percentage, it’s a skill the Badgers can refine to enhance his efficiency from deep.
Wisconsin is currently in a recruiting battle with North Carolina for Boyd’s commitment, but the Badgers are considered the frontrunners. If he chooses Wisconsin, Boyd would provide the team with the dynamic point guard they need and form a formidable backcourt duo alongside Blackwell.
