Former four-star wide receiver Hardley Gilmore IV has rejoined the Kentucky Wildcats following a brief and rocky stint with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, according to Pete Nakos of On3. Gilmore’s return comes just months after his December departure from Lexington, signaling an unexpected yet pivotal twist in the early stages of his college football career.
A Short-Lived Transfer
Hardley Gilmore IV entered the NCAA transfer portal on December 28, 2024, after a freshman season at Kentucky that hinted at his long-term potential. Despite missing the first half of the year with a broken collarbone, Gilmore managed to make an impact late in the season, recording six catches for 153 yards and a touchdown across five games. His speed and ability as a downfield threat added a spark to the Wildcats’ offense.
Shortly after entering the portal, Gilmore committed to Nebraska, where he reunited with former Kentucky wide receivers coach Daikiel Shorts and teammate Dane Key. The move initially seemed promising, offering a fresh start in a new offensive scheme. However, the opportunity quickly unraveled. In March, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed that Gilmore had been dismissed from the team, though no public explanation was given.
A Returning Piece to a Rebuilt Offense
Gilmore’s return to Kentucky comes as he rejoins a much-transformed wide receiver unit. Since his departure in December, the Wildcats have bolstered their receiving corps with three experienced transfers: Kendrick Law from Alabama, Troy Stellato from Clemson, and J.J. Hester from Oklahoma. Combined with the return of key contributors Ja’Mori Maclin and Fred Farrier II, the group now presents a deep and dynamic arsenal for new wide receivers coach L’Damian Washington. Gilmore re-enters a more competitive, talent-rich environment—one that could elevate both his development and Kentucky’s offensive potential heading into the 2025 season.
Where Gilmore fits into Kentucky’s revamped receiver rotation remains uncertain. His physical gifts have never been in doubt, and his prior experience with the program could help smooth his return. Still, with a deeper and more competitive group around him, Gilmore’s ability to carve out a role will likely hinge on his consistency—both in performance and in maintaining focus off the field.
Legal Situation Looms
Gilmore’s off-field issues could also play a role in his future with Kentucky. In December, he was charged with misdemeanor assault after allegedly striking an individual during an incident at a Lexington storage facility. The legal proceedings surrounding the charge are still ongoing, leaving uncertainty about how the outcome may affect his eligibility or his standing with the team.

Gilmore’s return to Kentucky provides an opportunity for a fresh start, both for him and the program. If he can maintain focus and stay healthy, the raw talent that earned him a top-400 national ranking remains. His journey is now about making the most of this second chance in the SEC.
