UNC football head coach Bill Belichick may have just found his starting quarterback.

After months of speculation over who would lead the Tar Heels under center in Belichick’s debut as a college head coach, it appears a clear frontrunner has finally emerged.
Uncertainty surrounding the health of senior Max Johnson and rumored interest in several transfer candidates fueled questions about the team’s quarterback situation. But now, UNC seems to have secured one of its top targets.
On Thursday night, On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported that former South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez has committed to North Carolina. Lopez had been closely tied to the Tar Heels ever since entering the transfer portal.
Lopez took over as South Alabama’s full-time starter as a redshirt freshman last season, showcasing both efficiency and versatility. He completed 66.0 percent of his passes for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns, with just five interceptions. On the ground, he proved to be a dual-threat weapon, rushing for 465 yards and seven scores during the 2024 campaign.
The 6-foot, 220-pound Alabama native entered the transfer portal Monday morning, and UNC’s coaching staff wasted no time positioning themselves as the top contender. Their swift pursuit paid off, landing the three-star transfer prospect just days later. Lopez heads to Chapel Hill with three years of eligibility remaining, giving the Tar Heels a promising option under center for the foreseeable future.
