The Seattle Seahawks are heading into the 2025 season looking to build on the foundation laid by Geno Smith. Although they traded Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, they brought in Sam Darnold, who is coming off a breakout 2024 campaign in which he led the Minnesota Vikings to 14 regular season wins.
However, it appears Seattle may be gearing up for yet another change under center.
It seems the Seattle Seahawks aren’t finished reshaping their quarterback room this offseason. According to ESPN, the team is open to trading backup quarterback Sam Howell, and there’s reportedly interest from other teams in acquiring him.
This news follows a whirlwind of changes at the position in Seattle. Just last month, the Seahawks traded longtime starter Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders and quickly followed that move by signing Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract in free agency.
Seattle also recently added veteran Drew Lock, further crowding a quarterback room that already includes Jaren Hall. That brings the total to four quarterbacks on the roster — a number that’s almost certain to be reduced before the season begins.
Under new head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks carried three quarterbacks last season. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak also favored keeping three QBs during his stints with both Minnesota and New Orleans. However, during Pete Carroll’s tenure, the team often rolled with just two.
Given the numbers and the shifting strategy, Howell may find himself as the odd man out — especially if Seattle sees an opportunity to gain value in a trade.
