The North Carolina Tar Heels are set to undergo a major transformation heading into next season.
Following a first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament, several key players have opted to move on from the program. Leading scorer RJ Davis has wrapped up his college career after using up his NCAA eligibility, and now, UNC is also parting ways with standout freshman Drake Powell.
After just one season in Chapel Hill, Powell announced his decision to declare for the 2025 NBA Draft, signaling the likely end of his time in college basketball.
In response to the news, teammate Seth Trimble took to social media to show his support, posting an uplifting message for Powell:
“More than proud of you brudda,” Trimble wrote. “This just the start, let’s get it.”
Drake Powell initially committed to the Tar Heels as a highly-touted five-star recruit, ranked No. 2 among small forwards and No. 11 overall in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports.
Before teaming up with Seth Trimble and the rest of the UNC squad, Powell was one of the most coveted recruits in the country, fielding offers from programs like LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State, Miami, and several others.
Meanwhile, Trimble is preparing for his fourth season in Chapel Hill. In the 2024 campaign, he contributed 11.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, stepping up as a key presence for the Tar Heels.
Looking ahead, Trimble will be joined by two four-star recruits from the class of 2025 — Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis. Head coach Hubert Davis is also bolstering the roster through the transfer portal, bringing in Jonathan Powell, Henri Veesaar, Kyan Evans, and Jarin Stevenson to add depth and talent to next season’s squad.
