In the final hours leading up to Friday night’s NCAA Transfer Portal deadline, Arkansas saw another departure from its football program. Redshirt sophomore safety Christian Ford has entered the portal, capping off a hectic week of roster changes for head coach Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks.
Ford’s Time at Arkansas
Christian Ford signed with Arkansas in 2023 out of McKinney High School in Texas, where he was rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports. The 6-foot, 176-pound defensive back ranked as the No. 68 safety nationally and the No. 115 overall recruit in Texas. Ford chose the Razorbacks over several Power Five offers, including Arizona, TCU, and Nebraska.
Despite his recruiting profile, Ford struggled to establish a role in Fayetteville. He redshirted his first season and did not appear in any games during his second year. Throughout 2024 spring practices, Ford spent much of his time on the sidelines and was not featured among the top three defensive units. His departure lowers Arkansas’ scholarship count to 83, giving the Razorbacks added roster flexibility heading into the summer.
Ongoing Portal Activity
Ford was the second Razorback to enter the portal on Friday, following running back Tyrell Reed, who had scored both a rushing and receiving touchdown in limited action last season. Their departures capped off a week of transfer movement that began with freshman quarterback Madden Iamaleava transferring to UCLA. Redshirt freshman guard Zuri Madison, running back JuJu Pope, and wide receiver Shamar Easter also announced their exits earlier in the week.
Despite the outgoing transfers, Arkansas made a key addition with former Florida State quarterback Trever Jackson, a former four-star recruit, committing to the Razorbacks on Thursday. Arkansas currently holds the No. 17 transfer class in the nation, according to 247Sports, a promising sign for head coach Sam Pittman’s roster-building efforts.
Impact of Ford’s Departure
While Ford’s exit doesn’t significantly affect Arkansas’ immediate depth chart—given he had yet to see the field—it underscores a continued need for improvement in the secondary. The Razorbacks remain focused on bolstering a safety group that has struggled at times in recent seasons.
For Ford, the transfer portal offers a fresh start and a potential opportunity for more playing time elsewhere. For Arkansas, it opens another spot to strengthen the roster as the program shifts its attention to summer workouts and preparations for the 2025 season.
