The South Carolina Gamecocks are set to honor head coach Dawn Staley with a statue.
The City of Columbia announced Monday that a statue of Staley, the legendary women’s basketball coach, will be unveiled Wednesday at the University of South Carolina.
Since taking over as head coach in 2008, Staley has built South Carolina into a powerhouse, leading the Gamecocks to three national championships, nine SEC titles, and an overall record of 475-110. Under her leadership, the team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament every year since 2011, with the exception of the 2020 season when the tournament was canceled.
This season, the Gamecocks reached the national championship game with hopes of securing back-to-back titles. However, they fell short against the UConn Huskies.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in basketball history, Staley has earned the Naismith Coach of the Year Award four times, including three consecutive honors from 2022 to 2024.
Before her coaching career, Staley was an accomplished player. She was a six-time WNBA All-Star, a two-time USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year, and the Naismith College Player of the Year during her time at the University of Virginia.
Looking ahead, Staley remains focused on continuing her success with South Carolina, aiming to capture her fourth national championship as head coach.
