Indiana men’s basketball has added a key piece to its roster, landing a commitment from Florida Gators transfer forward Sam Alexis, per Joe Tipton of On3.
A native of Apopka, Florida, Alexis averaged 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds across 24 games last season, helping Florida capture the 2024–25 National Championship. Despite flashes of potential, Alexis’ role in Todd Golden’s system was limited due to the Gators’ crowded frontcourt rotation.
The 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward spent just one season at Florida after transferring from Chattanooga, where he played two years. In 89 career games, Alexis has averaged 7.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 52.5 percent from the field. During his time with the Mocs, he earned third-team All-Southern Conference honors and was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team in 2023–24, after making the All-Freshman Team the year prior.
Indiana is in clear need of frontcourt depth following the departures of Mackenzie Mgbako, Oumar Ballo, Dallas James, Malik Reneau, and Bryson Tucker. While senior Luke Goode could potentially return, the Hoosiers currently have just two to three true frontcourt options in Reed Bailey and Trent Sisley. Tucker DeVries is also expected to see time at the three or four, depending on how the lineup rounds out.
New head coach Darian DeVries, known for favoring small-ball lineups — none of his starters last season stood taller than 6-foot-8 — typically emphasizes guard play and floor spacing. However, competing in the Big Ten requires greater size and rebounding ability. Alexis is expected to immediately fill that role with his physical presence and defensive skills.
An incoming senior, Alexis will have one season of eligibility remaining.
He becomes Indiana’s ninth transfer portal addition this offseason, joining Tucker DeVries, Conor Enright, Reed Bailey, Lamar Wilkerson, Jasai Miles, Tayton Conerway, Jason Drake, and Nick Dorn.
