The incident last Saturday that resulted in the fatal injuries of Jeff Sperbeck — a close friend, agent, and longtime business partner of John Elway — is now being described as a “horrific accident,” according to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, whose office has jurisdiction over the case.
“This appears to be a horrific accident,” Bianco told The Denver Post. “And unfortunately for all those involved, one of the people — well, a couple of them — happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.”
The sheriff’s department completed its preliminary investigation into the incident earlier this week. Bianco stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting any criminal charges are warranted.
He also confirmed that medical personnel who responded to the scene found no indication that Elway, who had been driving the golf cart at the time, was under the influence of alcohol.
Sperbeck remained on life support until Wednesday and passed away at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 62. He and Elway had maintained a close personal and professional relationship since the early 1990s.
