Only two scholarship players from the 2024–25 UNC basketball team are currently locked in for the 2025–26 season. Still, head coach Hubert Davis, now entering his fifth year, is preparing to bring in a highly regarded incoming group: a No. 7-ranked recruiting class with three standout freshmen, along with five experienced transfers — four of whom are rated as four-star prospects — making for a transfer haul that ranks 17th nationally.

Altogether, it’s a promising roster. Yet, given UNC’s placement either just inside or outside most preseason top-25 rankings, it’s clear that college basketball analysts aren’t viewing the Tar Heels as definitive title contenders at this point.
That outlook was underscored on Tuesday, when ESPN analyst Jeff Borzello dropped UNC three spots to No. 25 in his updated rankings. With roughly two weeks having passed since their last roster addition, the Tar Heels appear to be losing ground to other programs still capitalizing on the transfer portal.

He projects the Tar Heels’ starting lineup to feature junior guard Kyan Evans, senior guard Seth Trimble, sophomore forward Jonathan Powell, freshman forward Caleb Wilson, and redshirt junior center Henri Veesaar.
