Gerrit Cole spoke with Yankees reporters for the first time since his surgery, offering a candid three-word response.
- The New York Yankees are off to a strong start this season, sitting at 19-15 and holding the top spot in the AL East. They’ve managed this success despite being without their ace, right-hander Gerrit Cole, who is sidelined for the entire year after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March—cutting his season short before it even began.
Now, two months post-surgery, Cole spoke publicly for the first time and summed up his feelings in three simple words:
“I miss playing,” he said, via The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner on X (formerly Twitter).
If all goes according to plan, Cole hopes to begin throwing again in August. Before the injury shut him down, he made two appearances during spring training, surrendering seven runs over six innings. After one outing against the Minnesota Twins, he experienced pain the following morning. After informing the team, tests revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
This isn’t Cole’s first battle with elbow issues—last season, he dealt with nerve irritation and edema but managed to avoid surgery at the time.
